Funding Advice

Funding is a detailed and specialist area of information and advice.

The leading national charities have web sites from which much information can be culled.

Advice about grants can be found on the Grants page of this site.

Recommended sites are:

Funding Central: Funding Central is a free website for the whole voluntary and community sector, including social enterprise, providing access to thousands of funding and finance opportunities, plus a wealth of tools and resources supporting organisations to develop sustainable income strategies appropriate to their needs. www.fundingcentral.org.uk

Government: The Key Government website, about its own funding, is:
www.governmentfunding.org.uk. This is an invaluable source of information and includes the facility for being emailed about new funding stream as they become available.

The Institute of Fundraising : The Institute is a professional fundraising body that offers courses and qualifications. However the website does include substantial amounts of free information – see www.institute-of-fundraising.org.uk.

NCVYS: The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services produces a funding bulletin each month.  For more see: http://www.ncvys.org.uk/funding_update.html

NCVO: The National Council for Voluntary Organisations has a Funding Advice Pack and Toolkit – available at www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/sfp/Introductory-Pack. Its Finance Hub has an excellent Guide to Sustainable funding.

European: The following website is an excellent guide to European Union (EU) funding streams, but please be aware that it is oriented to London, nevertheless many of the EU grants are available generically, and so do also apply to Surrey.

For a quick update on current European funding initiatives see http://www.londoncouncils.glegroup.co.uk/

Surrey Community Action: has considerable expertise and a GRANTfinder database service (as do the CVS in Surrey) through its specialist Funding and Resource Adviser who can be contacted by email: paulines@surreyca.org.uk or phone on 01483 459292 Ext 215. Surrey Community Action also offer courses on Fundraising; details can be found on their website at www.surreyca.org.uk or by contacting Ann Meager on 01483 459292 Ext. 238.

Other potentially useful subscription websites that charge are:

www.fundinginformation.org. This offers a payable subscription service for information about grants www.grantsonline.org.uk. This is another subscription service that is strong on European grants.

Funding : The Key Tasks

  1. Ensure your own organisation is in good shape and has a high reputation
  2. Develop a Business Plan about your Vision, and Purpose
  3. Build a Sustainable Funding Strategy with at least three sources of income
  4. Be clear about the Purpose and unit costs of the project for which you are seeking funding, and argue convincingly for it
  5. Target the right funders for your project (may be European, Government, Statutory authority, Big Lottery, Grant making trusts, Corporates, Private funding
  6. Ensure the application is well presented, and build a relationship with the funder
  7. Learn from the experience – whether successful, or unsuccessful
  8. Ask, ask again and keep trying!
