Into The Wild

As part of the 60th Anniversary of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) designation in 2018, Surrey Hills ANOB are planning a number of high profile events, including an `Into the Wild' project to enable young people to benefit from connecting with, enjoying, and caring for the wild places of the Surrey Hills.

Leatherhead Youth Project undertook a pilot project of the sort of activities this might entail with a group of 14 year olds on an overnight expedition, staying in tree hammocks, cooking on open fire, reflective walking and more.  The results included young people building self esteem, confidence and teamwork (see video: https://vimeo.com/225397039 ).

In partnership with Surrey Hills ANOB (http://www.surreyhills.org/), Surrey Youth Focus are keen to develop a plan for 2018 which includes an application to the Young Roots Heritage Lottery Fund to pay of the delivery of youth projects in the Surrey Hills. Please note, it is expected that not all organisations will want to take part in an overnight expedition, other options maybe available – this is your chance to meet some of the heritage and land owners and say how you might use this opportunity. We are particularly keen to explore opportunities for disadvantaged young people, young carers and young people from minority backgrounds and young people with a disability.

The next stage of the application process is a presentation and workshop on Tuesday 19th September 2017 at the Surrey Hills Estate Office, near Box Hill, at 1400.   This will bring heritage providers (land owners, countryside managers and activity providers) together with young people organisations, to develop a menu of sites/ ideas/ options for activities in the Surrey Hills that young people can plan, participate and enjoy. It will also look at the legacy of the project for young people and the cost to organisations to deliver. LYP will be there to present their pilot project and answer any questions you have.

If your youth organisation is interested in “Into the wild” we would be delighted to welcome you to the workshop on 19th September. Please can you confirm to Su.freeman@surreyyouthfocus.org.uk
by Thursday 7th September.
