Volunteering is at the heart of the experience of the voluntary, community and faith sector. The encouragement of volunteering is a major priority for the Coalition Government , and a significant part of its thinking about “The Big Society”.
In Surrey this role was undertaken until April 2011 by SurreyVinvolved (formerly Millenium Volunteers) who are based at the YMCA at Redhill but also have offices at the YMCAs in Guildford, and Woking. See: www.surreyvinvolved.org or email to info@surreyvinvolved.org or phone 01737 784970 (Redhill).
The contract of Surrey Vinvolved, who had done excellent work in promoting volunteering by young people finished in April 2011, as did the main national contract.
Volunteer centres in District and Borough councils remain the principal source of volunteering opportunities. See here for a list of centres in Surrey. These are an essential first port of call for a volunteer enquiry.
Surrey Youth Focus itself is looking for someone who can provide links to employers and the universities to promote volunteering , and to broker between the needs of our member organizations and potential corporate and student volunteers. For example there is a waiting list of 450 girls wanting to join the Girl Guides in Girlguiding Surrey East; the Scouts similarly have a big waiting list. It is not necessary to become a member of a uniformed organisation to volunteer for them.
Elsewhere we often find that “mums and dads” are willing to set up a youth club but not to become Chairman/ Treasurer/organizer, so there are roles there.
